Coming Soon!

Coming soon.. "Life in Guamtanamo". Yes.. I've decided to change my blog's title. I figure if we're going to be living here.. I should take advantage of the potentially much wider audience.. and make the blog interesting to work on again by starting fresh.
Life in guamtanamo, best blog in guam, guam's best blog, guam's newest blog
We're still setting up and getting acclimated to our new surrounds.. everything's been great so far except for the weather. Guam feels like it's several degrees hotter than Saipan?.. maybe it is all of the concrete.

It will be a couple of weeks before I get some new posts up and there will be alot of changes to the face of the blog in the in-between time.. and as soon as I find some time.

Beautiful days

Well we're at our temporary residence.. a hotel.. watching the "Godfather". Beautiful friends of ours were kind enough to keep some of our boxed up stuff until we're able to have them shipped over and they're going to take over payments on the car!.. good friends they are. It's been a hectic week.. but Sunday's weather is typical beautiful Saipan weather.. and the nostalgia-driven sadness is starting to kick in.

I'm not going to post about anything controversial.. I've actually not kept up with much of the news this week. I did catch a radio ad for a covenant party kickoff rally or something.. no.. I'm not going to go there.

I realize how much I'm going to miss Saipan. When you get past the inept politicians.. and the relatively small group of ilk in the community.. this place is paradise. Hopefully things won't get too much worse before the masses wake up and really.. grow up. It's well time the voting populous evolve from voting based on race, family or picnic tables. Hopefully.. meaningless parties with no real political philosophies and the career politicians who've run this place into the ground.. are seeing their last days.

But I digress.. on a day like today.. the sun out.. the salt blowing through our open glass doors.. the aqua blue lagoon.. how can one spend too much time on bad thoughts.

What are we going to do with all of our accumulated junk!? Does anyone know of any storage type businesses here.. the kind where you rent a little space for your stuff and they give you a key so only you can access it? We cannot locate any.best of the best

On to some musings..

I watched a local cable newsclip from last week about the ongoing CNMI v. Feds court case. I think it was a recording of proceedings of the voice of Willens (it may not have been) arguing on behalf of the CNMI that (and this is very paraphrased).. that it would be insidious to uproot all of the nonresidents who've lived here for years and whose home this place has become.
i love guam, we love guam, we love saipan, i love saipan
Excuse me!.. but isn't this what the Unity March and all of the argument by many was about back right before and during the writing of the bill proposing federalization? Isn't this the argument that the administration and groups like TTT dashed and bashed? A knee-jerk reaction resulting purely and simply from freaking out about the potential loss of their future power, should too many non-indigenous ever have the opportunity to vote.. and I'm sure their was some good ole fashioned racism sprinkled in there for good measure.

Now they're using this argument that they originally repudiated as part of their argument? Special status or whatever you want to call it could have been negotiated into the bill when it was being written.. but in the usual knee-jerk "we don't want any" fashion that has been the motus operandi of our elected officials.. they refused to even consider pushing any humane provisions.

Bye Steve Tilley.. just want you to know, I have nothing against you personally. I don't think the way with which zoning has begun is going to prove sustainable for zoning.. and don't think it's addressing the real problems of the island. I also don't care for the use of the office to dash businesses that have previously existed.. or use it to push particular beliefs of morality at the expense of businesses who have been operating legally.. and are usually small businesses without alot of capital. If you want to see a big difference right away.. start going after the bigger fish with the rotting factory buildings, the rotting minimalls, the former Hakubotan, former Wendy's, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.. Require a "clean paint" rule and adequate parking and landscaping. That's it.. you'll see a huge change in the landscape immediately.

Stanley "Ole Coot" Torres has presented the local Republican party with a huge gift! The gift.. he's not going to run under their banner anymore. Now if they could get rid of 90% of the others that usually run in their party.. and change their party name.. and promote progressive ideas.. they'll have a decent party. Maybe "Ole Coot" is getting that ball rolling?

The Marianas Trench National Marine Monument a dedication to the Seabees?.. are you flippin' kidding me? I just heard this.. haven't read any story on it.. but whoever came up with this idea should have no role in any government decision making (if it was a government official). How absurd.. how visionless.. how typical. If a dedication is necessary.. I don't see why it is.. it is already dedicated to the marine life there. But if one is absolutely necessary.. why not dedicate it to someone who worked..had real interest in.. or promoted marine awareness or protection? Why don't we do what we can to promote the monument.. and stop with the knee-jerk silly and useless reactions that continue to be promoted to ensure the monument is as unsuccessful in its goals as possible.. like dedicating it to the Seabees. Silly asses.

This Blog is Dead

Yes I'm back from the beautiful island of Guam. We extended our stay an additional day.. a much needed additional day of doing absolutely nothing but eating good food and windowshopping.

Sadly, this blog is dead. Well.. not really dead.. but in transition. In the coming weeks it will transition from the "Best Blog in Saipan" (google it).. to the "Best Blog in Guam".

Unfortunately (or fortunately..depending on how you look at it).. my sweeter half has accepted a job on Guam. While I have mixed feelings about leaving.. I'm sure the move will be but for a few years. Maybe I'll transition into the more encompassing "Best Blog in the Marianas"?

So.. the "Best Blog in Saipan" will be dead.. for a couple of years anyways. If you're a "no-gooder" (talkin' bout you "Ole Coot").. there's no need to cheer and jump up and down.. I will definitely try to keep up with Saipan news and keep the heat on those that have done and continue to do great damage to this place I've loved so very much. I'll also certainly be back often to visit.. and will post then when I'm on island. If you have tips or ideas.. I'd still appreciate them emailed to me.

I would have never thought in my wildest imagination.. that the readership here would grow from 4-10 readers per day to 400-900 per day and sometimes over 2000. I sincerely hope I can juggle enough interesting stuff from both islands to keep this blog interesting to all of you. Thank you also to all those who have sent me tips and information, ideas and thanks.. you helped build this blog.

As you've probably read above.. we're getting ready to skidaddle off about 120 miles. So.. I'm not going to make this the long drawn out post it was planned to be. Instead.. I'll just leave some brief thoughts on the candidates.

Juan Pan - If you want $3.05 wages (or lower).. he's probably your candidate. He testified at the hearings to stop the wage increases. In my opinion.. he's an old-school politician with old ideas who will continue us down the same road. His selection of Camacho as his running mate doesn't lend any possibility of progressive government either.
tinian, rota
Heinz Hofschneider - He's an unknown.. some good decisions and some bad decisions. My fear is.. he'll be reckless. The worst thing you can do to the economy right now is just dump off employees.. they're the buyers. I want to see a plan. As running mates go.. Palacios is old school.. and his positions have been far from progressive as well.
pacific islands, mariana islands, marianas
Juan Babauta - Been there.. done that. The candidate you want to like.. who has some progressive ideas.. but made an awful lot of mistakes. He says he's learned from them (which is a refreshing statement to hear here).. but I don't know if I'm all that sold. I want to see a plan. As far as his running mate goes.. his selection of Guerrero is a plus. He's young, progressive, educated and an educator.
i love guam, i love saipan, we love saipan
Ray Guerrero - Wasn't there an investigation that revolved around an autoshop that he was affiliated with that opened up for the primary purpose of servicing CUC vehicles.. while he was seated as the CUC Director? Old school.. old school.. old school. As for his running mate.. I have no idea who this person is or will be.

The Last Coconut Tree and the Brash Youngster

(Read into this what you will..)
most popular blog ever
Once upon a time on an island not too far from here.. there once stood a large coconut tree in the middle of a village.. a village totally dependent on the nuts and the leaves of the tree. Particular parasites had ravaged the island’s coconut trees and it was the only one left. As tall and strong as the coconut tree was.. even it was not immune to the parasites. The villagers watched the signs of its demise as the parasites slowly ate it away. The coconut tree didn’t have long to live.. and the villagers continued to gather up its coconuts and leaves as fast as they were available and they were allowed to.. as they new these would be their last.
saipan's best blog
One day a younger member of the village spoke up and said "I have a plan!" The elders in the village scoffed and wondered what kind of a braggart would be so bold at such a young age as to speak up and think themselves smarter than they. But they amused the youngster.. "so what is this great plan?" they asked.
saipan blog, saipanblog
The youngster replied.. "Why don’t we take a few of the coconuts and plant them, so that they’ll grow and we will have new trees in the future".
visit saipan, hotels, rental cars, taxis, sightseeing, wwii, ww2, festivals, fiestas, sporting events
"Nonsense!" shouted one of the elders.. "If we take a few coconuts, that will be a few less coconuts for us!" Another elder exclaimed.. "The roof of my house needs fresh coconut leaves!" And the wife of that elder cackled.. "Yes! We want our share of the leaves! The trees have been here forever and they’ll be back".
northern mariana islands
The youngster tried to explain to them that.. if they didn’t plant a few of the coconuts, they would have no trees in the future, and they would have no coconuts in the future.. and they would not have any leaves in the future. The youngster tried to convince them that this disaster that has befallen them can be short-lived.. but that they must look to the future.. they must plan.. and they may have to endure some struggle in the short-run.. but that the planting of the coconuts would ensure a future supply of their needs, and would encourage the village to think of new ways to utilize more of its resources, learn new ways of survival and make the village a better and stronger place in the long run.
guam blog, guamblog
After pleading with the elders and villagers, and volunteering to organize a group to plan and carry out the planting of the coconuts.. the elder thought to be the wisest of the wise and the leader of the village stood up.. "I have listened very carefully, you are young but you are intelligent.. and while I understand what you are saying, and agree with you in principle.. taking from the coconut tree is the only thing we know. I am the leader of the village because I have made and kept promises and I am owed debts. My family has grown large because of the nourishment gained from the coconuts that are paid to us on top of my handsome allotment.. and my people expect that they will continue to receive their usual daily share of coconuts and leaves. If they do not.. I will no longer keep my position as the leader of this village. While your idea may be wise.. the people want their coconuts now.. and they will take every last one of them until there are no more left. The day I do not give my people their coconuts.. Is the day I lose all power."
tinian, rota
"But I plead with you.." said the youngster. "I wish to hear no more of these plans!" said the leader of the village. "If I hear of them again.. I will have no choice but to banish you. You will learn that.. sometimes what we know is the right course.. is not always the course that is followed.. now go and be silent".
visit the marianas, cnmi, marianas trench marine monument
Two years later the last coconut tree died.. after struggling to survive for several years more on barks and grasses, and after numerous deaths from hunger and illness.. the last villager finally died of starvation.. and the village ceased to exist.

Big kudos to the Pacific Island's Club.. hosts of the 17th Marianas Cup Beach Volleyball Tournament. The venue was great, the weather was great and the matches were exceptional.. a fun day for all. Marianas on the web: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Out of curiousity, I spent a bit of time googling a smattering of tourism and investor related sites that contain information about the CNMI. There's a whole lot of them out there. Some of the sites were amazingly complimentary.. some were hilariously replete with questionable information.. some were quite harsh and were painful to read.. and most were fairly honest, even though that honesty carried with it some things you'd probably wish a potential visitor would never read. The plan was to include excerpts from the various sites in this post.. but there are just too many. Instead, I've gathered up a few.. check them out for yourselves.

Far from reasonable: The last gasps of a detestable economic model

For 10 years the government of the CNMI let the measly minimum wage sit at the grossly unlivable level of $3.05 an hour.
paseo, dfs, shopping, tennis, waterpark, taxi, airport, archery
Finally, after federal intervention, the working men and women of this community are slowly seeing an improvement in their wages.. an improvement that should have happened years ago.
golf, courses, snorkeling, trekking, sunset cruise, pool, diving, beaches
Now.. your government seeks to stop the wage hikes, which still reside at a paltry $4.05 an hour.. and possibly even roll them back!? No.. I am not f#cking kidding.
hotels, rental cars, budget, sightseeing, hiking, parasailing
Part of the argument they're using is based on a comparative percentage increase between our wage gain and the U.S. mainland's through 2014 ("Also, the DOL reported that “by comparison, if U.S. minimum wages were increased to the level of the 75th percentile of hourly-paid U.S. workers, that the adjusted wage rate would be $16.50 per hour”). The big huge astronomical problem with that argument is.. THE MAINLAND DIDN'T HAVE SUCH AN UNREASONABLY LOW MINIMUM WAGE TO BEGIN WITH! On the face of it.. that argument is weak and plain silly.
visit marianas, visit the mariana islands, visit saipan, tinian, rota
I'm not going to go through the litany of all of my arguments for the wage.. they're all over this blog. I say to those who think that the current minimum wage of $4.05 is just fine, or god-forbid a rollback to $3.55 or $3.05 is prudent.. you should spend one or two years receiving and living off only that wage and then come back here with your silly arguments. I'm more than positive you won't be extolling the virtues of the current wage or worse.. a rollback.
moms who blog, momblogs, mom blogs, motherbloggers
Not forgetting the history of what's gotten us to this point is important.. while residents in a calculated fashion were engineered out of the private sector and non-resident cheap labor was taken absolute advantage of.. a few folks, the cogs in the machine that meticulously constructed the system.. profited hugely from it. While non-resident contract workers lived in containers or tin shacks and were ferried around two-dozen to a flatbed truck to worksites, many screwed out of wages, and residents were made dependent on government jobs and foodstamps.. a lot of others reaped great rewards. Many of these same folks still believe they can revive that dying system and continue to reap more ill-gotten gains off of the backs of continued cheap labor.
most popular blog ever
Here's a short history on the CNMI minimum wage.. on a number of occasions in the early 90s, under pressure from the feds.. the CNMI government promised to put in place processes to raise the minimum wage.. these were ruses to stave off the feds. In 1995 a minimum wage law was passed by the legislature and signed into law by the Governor to increase the minimum wage in increments from $2.75 to $4.25 by the year 2000. This was yet another one of their tactics to stave off the feds.. as the legislature overturned the law shortly before the first increase was to go into effect in 1996. After continued heat from the feds, the next year (1997).. the legislature increased the wage to $3.05 for some and $2.90 for garment and construction workers. $3.05 was eventually made an across the board wage.. and stayed in place until the feds finally imposed themselves on the wage system ten years later.. and .50 annual wage hikes were put in place.
we love saipan, i love saipan
You will probably come across a letter in tomorrow's papers addressed to the U.S. Government from the Governor's of the CNMI and American Samoa.. you'll read the same ole sad stories they've used to justify cheap labor that the governments have been using for the last two decades. They also use one of their favorite lines to try and fool the feds into believing they have any inclination to pay fair wages.. "Notwithstanding these problems, CNMI is committed to building a sustainable economy based on tourism and other economic initiatives, and has indicated its support for future increases in the minimum wage as warranted by existing economic conditions." "The CNMI.. has indicated its support for future increases in the minimum wage.." BULLSH#T!

Elected leaders and crooked business here have proved time and time and time again that "support for future increases in the minimum wage".. is the furthest thing from their mind. Their proven record is.. under their control, they have absolutely NO intention of raising minimum wages, and in-fact would probably prefer that they be rolled back. BULLSH#T!

It is a new time.. it is time to design a new economy.. one that is built on the backs of a workforce, Chamorro, Carolinian, Mainlander, Filipino, Micronesian, etc., THAT ARE FULLY EMPOWERED MEMBERS OF THIS COMMUNITY. Workers that can help "determine" their wages through collective bargaining, and are not kept under the thumb by employers who threaten to not renew contracts, and who feel invested in this community and have a say in the decisions of this community.

I know numerous federal offices regularly read this blog.. your server names and departments are constantly listed in my Analytics reports. I say this to you.. the CNMI will never see a redesign of its economic model without these minimum wage increases. While it might be a painful process.. the entire landscape of business here must be changed.. it must be weened off cheap labor. It must be forced to invest in a resident population. For the betterment of the entire community.. it must be forced to compete for employees, and pay fair and competitive wages. Until all residents feel empowered to speak out about their governance.. and participate in their governance.. the CNMI will see NO real change. This will only come when the private-sector working population of the CNMI is made up primarily of residents, and no segment of the workforce are in a position to be treated as second-class citizens.. and this can only occur when the minimum wage is a reasonable one. When you consider that every single expense here is substantially greater than that of the mainland U.S. - whether it is fuel, or power, or food, or household goods.. the current minimum wage is FAR from reasonable.

Damage control..

"I voted “no” on the veto override because Governor Fitial invoked the Constitutional protection of Separation of Powers between the three co-equal branches of the CNMI Government. It is not scandalous. It is not glamorous. It does not make headlines. It is simply a matter of upholding and defending the Constitution."
- "representative" Joseph N. Camacho in a letter to the public posted on his website
you love this blog
Did it take the Governor to "invoke" the Constitutional protection of Separation of Powers? If Camacho felt so strongly that provisions of the budget that required new hires be approved by the House and Senate crossed the line where the separation of powers (per the Constitution) was concerned.. why did he vote "YES" to pass the budget in the first place? If he felt that provisions of the budget crossed the line.. why didn't he try to stop this.. since he is so keen on "upholding and defending the Constitution", when a vote was taken to pass or not pass the budget the first two times!? We didn't hear any kind of significant debate with regard to problems he had with this section of the budget during the many months of deliberation? If he truly believes that this section violated the Constitution.. does he uphold edicts of the Constitution, like the separation of powers provision.. only when the Governor calls the Legislature on it? If the Governor said nothing.. would he let it slide, even though he believes the section of the budget violates the Constitution?

As an attorney.. or former attorney.. the representative is probably just testing our legal acumen when he refers to anything written in the blogs as "slander", as he knows that "untruths" that are put forward as "statements of fact" that are broadcast or written.. or on websites and blogs, would be called "libel".. not "slander".

I'd be very curious to know what "slander" (really libel).. the representative is referring to.. and from what particular blog? Certainly nothing that is placed on this blog through posts as a "statement of fact" is an untruth. The subject of the post might not like the truth.. they may feel uncomfortable reading the truth.. they may be angry that the truth is made accessible to large audiences.. but that does not make it any less the truth.
