It's akin to businesses not paying decent wages.. because they don't have to. What I'm talking about is the statement by Felix Sasamoto regarding his killing of two Napolean Wrasse. “I don't understand why these people are angry. I didn't do anything wrong. I didn't break any law,” and “No one should blame me for catching the fish. I will continue to catch them until it becomes against the law for me to do so,” he said. So, even with the knowledge that this great fish is rare, and in most areas almost extinct. And even with the understanding that they are hugely important to our tourism and ecosystem. And despite the fact that he is an employee of our Department of Fish and Wildlife.. he kills them anyways, because, as he puts it.. it's not against the law. So until our feeble legislature makes it against the law.. he will go on killing them.

The fact that he doesn't understand "why these people are angry", is not attributed only to ignorance, but also to that greed that is pervasive in many. Why just peruse this blog and you'll find school officials traveling excessively, confidence men pushing casino acts, lawmakers trying to grab end-of-term junkets, etc., and now DFW personnel taking Napolean Wrasse.

Find a better way to purchase your wife's medication. There are other fish and other ways to honorably make money. That is not an excuse for killing rare animals. And the "trophy photo" doesn't send the message that the "hunt" was simply to facilitate medication purposes.

Truly sad.
